Authorship and Contributorship

Authorship criteria

The journal follows the authorship criteria of the ICMJE, adapted to art history and the arts. Everyone listed as an author meets all four of the following criteria:

  1. substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work, or to the collection, analysis or interpretation of data, sources or works;
  2. drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content;
  3. final approval of the version to be published; and
  4. agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of it are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Contributors who do not meet these criteria (e.g. people who only helped with data collection, archival searches or translation, or who provided funding or general supervision) are acknowledged in the Funding and Acknowledgements statement. Ghost, gift and guest authorship are not acceptable. Artificial intelligence tools cannot be listed as authors.

Author contribution statement

At the end of each article, under the heading “Author Contributions”, each author’s contribution is stated using the roles of the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy): Conceptualization, Data curation, Formal analysis, Funding acquisition, Investigation, Methodology, Project administration, Resources, Software, Supervision, Validation, Visualization, Writing – original draft, Writing – review & editing. Authors may also give the share of each contribution as a percentage.

Example: “Conceptualization: A. Yılmaz, B. Kaya; Investigation: B. Kaya; Writing – original draft: A. Yılmaz; Writing – review & editing: A. Yılmaz, B. Kaya. All authors have read and approved the final version.” For single-authored articles: “The article was prepared entirely by the author.”

Corresponding author

The corresponding author handles all correspondence with the journal, ensures that all authors have approved the submitted and revised versions, makes sure the declarations are complete and accurate, and responds to questions about the article after publication.

Author order and changes to authorship

The order of authors is a joint decision of the authors and is fixed at submission. After submission, authors may be added, removed or reordered only on a reasoned request to the editors with the written consent of all authors, including any author being removed; as a rule, authorship is not changed after acceptance. Authorship disputes are handled according to the COPE flowcharts and, where necessary, referred to the authors’ institutions.

Articles based on theses

In articles derived from a thesis, the author of the thesis and the supervisor are listed as authors if they meet the authorship criteria, and the thesis is cited in the article.

Translations and interviews

Translations identify the author and publication details of the original text and the translator; for texts still in copyright, the written permission of the rights holder is submitted with the translation. Interviews identify the interviewer and the interviewee, and the text is approved by the interviewee before publication.
